THE KONA NEWS                       Kailua-Kona, Hawaii                  cookiemanhdg.gif (3290 bytes)

(Copied from the Kona News (circa 1989) when I had a weekly column called, "Outback Big Island Style" by Uncle Gus. There will be a page on this site with directions to out of the way places on the Big Island of Hawaii)

Many cookie-eaters on our island know who Gus is. He has made many good friends on his culinary journey, inventing  and creating recipes such as Gus's Juicy Plum Chicken, Gus's bachelor with `Ono' Orange Sauce Chicken, East Coast Beans,  Succulent Roasted Turkey, Carrot Cake, Macadamia Sweet Rolls, Wagon Train Muffins and his ever famous "Secret and Confidential" Deluxe Chewy Nut Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe.

In his exuberant curiosity, Gus has discovered the hidden, romantic secrets our island holds. He has made friends from Naalehu to Waipio Valley and in between on both sides of the island.

Gus's recipes go beyond the culinary. He also has recipes for life saturated with quality and rich experiences.

His personal recipes for living involve carrying a bank deposit register, and in it he deposits that which transcends time, passages from his daily observances. The name he has given this account is-

                   Thoughts

"Be grateful for what you have, don't be envious."

"Let us dedicate ourselves to what the Greeks wrote, `To tame the savageness of man and to make gentle the life of this world.'"

   "Nobody is listening."

"Don't be afraid to take that giant step, You can't cross a chasm in two small ones."

"What we puzzle out for ourselves, we are least likely to forget."

"Most people will agree with you, if you'll just keep quiet."

"Opposition by others is often proof that you are on the right track."

"A lie may take care of the present, but it has no future."

"If you are patient in one moment of anger, you will be spared a 100 days of sorrow."

"If you want long friendships, develop a short memory."

"Love may not make the world go around, but it sure makes the trip worthwhile."

"It's not the destination that counts, it's the journey."

"Everything is temporary."

Gus recently left Kona to continue his travels and join his wife, Gina, in England for a year. We have asked Gus to remain our correspondent while in the UK.

He left behind his "Secret and Confidential" cookie recipe with clear and precise instructions for preparation and baking.

The recipe was published with the article, but was left out because it will be featured on a coming "Ono Recipes." page. ("ono" in Hawaiian means "good").

 Hi folks,

Enter at your own risk,  you will find no cuss words or spitting on the floor in WABI World. It's a place to bring your kids and the whole family.

When peeking in the rooms that are available, please keep in mind that Java Applets are a wee bit slow to load the first time. Also large graphics can slow things down. If at anytime you feel that something is not acceptable please send me a love note. (Hate notes are OK too, but they hit the circular file pronto).

We are here to try and make your life happier and to make it a pleasant place to visit.

What do you mean by LOST? After all I was a Navigator who made his way from over the wilds of Germany circa1943. Well, limped home a few times!

Aloha nui loa . . .

Keep smiling,

Uncle Gus (Head WABI)
